Dredging and Port Construction Award Winners Announced

The third annual Dredging and Port Construction Awards were held November 20 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands to promote innovation, efficiency and sustainability in the dredging industry. The event is organized by HIS Dredging and Port Construction.

DEME was awarded the Dredging and Port Construction (DPC) “Dredger of the Year” for its 164-meter (538-foot) LNG-powered, cutter suction dredge Spartacus. The vessel received the award for its combination of power, size and innovations. Spartacus has a total installed capacity of 44,180 kW and will be able to dredge in waters of up to 45 meter (148 feet) in depth. It will have both a Green Passport and Clean Design designation with on board waste heat recovery system that converts heat from exhaust gases to electrical energy and a cold recovery system that uses the subzero temperatures of LNG to power the air conditioning and cooling systems.

The award also recognized DEME’s green fleet investment program that focuses on increasing productivity and environmental performance.

Also at the award ceremony, the Jan De Nul Group won the ‘DPC Coastal Port Dredging Project of the Year Award’ for its sustainable use of dredged materials and efficient production planning.

From August 2017 to April 2018, Jan De Nul Group dredged 4 million cubic meters (5.2 million cubic yards) of mudstone in the Port of Linkou, Taiwan, and re-used the dredged sediments to extend the nearby port of Taipei by means of reclamation.

In order to be able to dredge and reclaim these quantities within the set period, a cutter suction dredge and a trailing suction hopper dredge worked simultaneously with the cutter pre-cutting the hard mudstone followed by the hopper to dredge the sediments and transport them directly to Taipei Port for reclamation.
