DREDGING HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST

35 years ago – 1978

Hawaiian Dredging & Construction Co. won a Corps of Engineers contract to build the Majuro dock and harbor complex on the Island of Dalap in the Majuro Atoll Marshal Islands to replace the existing port of Uliga Island. The contract amount was $4500000.

 

30 years ago – 1983

Manufacturers Innerspace Technologies and Odom Offshore Surveys Inc. introduced digital echo sounders for use in ordinary hydrographic surveys. The machines were sized to fit on small survey boats and fed survey date directly into computer systems as an alternative to hand-entering depth information onto paper charts. The NOAA ship Whiting homeported at Norfolk Virginia had had a digital sounder on board since 1969. It was developed by Wayne Ross NOAA and Digital Equipment Corp. who interfaced the sounder with an onboard computer – PDP8 – that year

 

20 years ago – 1993

GIW Industries supplied dredge pumps and spare parts for installation on the dragarms of Ballast Nedam’s hopper dredge Lelystad. Ballast Nedam converted the dredge to extend the dredging depth to 55 feet for use in dredging for the new Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong. GIW also installed dredge pumps with high-efficiency impellers on dredges owned by Boskalis HAM Dredging International and Rohde Nielsen.

 

Ernie Zuccolin was appointed president of Sceptre Dredging Ltd. a newly-formed division of the Canadian company Graymar Industries Limited which operated the hopper dredge Fraser Titan in Vancouver B.C. William Frost became vice president of operations for Sceptre and Roland Thibault continued as the company’s representative in Quebec. Leslie W. Jourdain was president and chief executive officer of Graymar.

 

10 years ago — 2003

Carol Sanders announced that her Seattle-based engineering company Sanders & Associates Inc. (SAI) had qualified as an 8(a) small business contractor.

 

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) conducted trials of simultaneous two-way transits of vessels through the Gaillard Cut.

 

5 years ago – 2008

Kruse Controls automated Tilcon Delaware’s aggregate dredge Lisa Rose.
