New Madrid Port Gets $1.3 Million Missouri Grant

The New Madrid (Mo.) County Port Authority, a multimodal port at Mile 885 on the Lower Mississippi River, has announced the receipt of a capital improvement grant from the state of Missouri. The grant, issued earlier this year, is for $1.3 million and is to be used for port improvements, said Timmie Lynn Hunter, executive director.

“The money will be used to bring various areas of the port above the 100-year flood stage,” Hunter said. “Additionally, we are set up to receive two more grants in the near future,” she said.

The port is located in the 42,000-acre St. Jude Industrial Park. The slackwater harbor is 1,500 feet long with a 225-foot bottom width and a 9-foot channel depth maintained by the Memphis Engineer District.

“We also just learned that we are among 10 sites in the Memphis District that are slated to be dredged this year,” Hunter added, “and that’s really exciting news.”
