Last Barge Removed From McAlpine Dam

The Louisville Engineer District announced on its Facebook page May 16 that the last sunken barge had been removed from McAlpine Dam. Nine barges became pinned against the dam when they broke loose December 25, 2018. Several were removed before high water caused removal operations to cease. The barges were not in the channel and did not impede navigation.

The Corps of Engineers worked closely with the Coast Guard and industry partners to monitor the barges, removing them when conditions allowed.

The district said five damaged barges remained on the Indiana bank of the Ohio River, upstream of the dam. Salvage crews will continue working to transport those barges offsite.
