WJ Purchases Barge Commodity, Fleet Data

The Waterways Journal Inc., doing business as Bound Media Group, has purchased data from IHS Markit publications Barge Fleet Profile, Barge Commodity Profile and Inland Fact Book. The assets were purchased from S&P Global (formerly IHS Markit). This data enables The Waterways Journal to offer historical reference and trends as part of its new effort to collect and report barge fleet data. Publicly available data will be combined with Bound Media Group’s own 2022 barge survey results to provide a complete and accurate picture as to the age and size of the barge fleet of the inland river system.

“We are aware of a void in timely and accurate data as it relates to the size and age of the inland barge fleet,” said Nelson Spencer Jr., publisher of The Waterways Journal. “With our industry relationships and resources, we hope to fill that need as an added value to existing media products and an industry we have served since 1887.”

Nearly half a billion tons of cargo are transported along the inland river system annually. Financial institutions, barge owners and operators, shippers, shipyards, government agencies and others will benefit from the data.
