Lorain Harbor Wins Dredging Contract

On June 4, the Buffalo Engineer District awarded Ryba Marine Construction Company a $749,000 contract to dredge the federal navigation channel in Lorain Harbor, Lorain, Ohio.

Under the contract, the Michigan-based company will remove 40,000 cubic yards of material. In 2024, 62,000 cubic yards of material were removed from Lorain Harbor.

The harbor spans 60 acres, as well as 2.6 miles of federal channel on the Black River.

According to the Corps, Lorain Harbor is a deep-draft commercial harbor that handled 992,000 tons of cargo in 2022, 89 percent of which included limestone. The harbor promotes $49.8 million in business revenue and $15.4 million in labor income to the transportation sector.

Dredging will focus on the entrance to the channel between the harbor’s breakwaters and portions of the Black River. Work will begin in mid-August and is expected to be completed within a month.
