We Work The Waterways hosted an Industry Interaction Day in Plaquemines Parish, La., October 1, hosting more than 160 students from across three high schools. Students spent the day learning about maritime opportunities and careers while interacting with industry leaders.

WWW brings together students with maritime industry professionals for a day dedicated to learning about the industry and the opportunities it presents. Students meet with representatives from a variety of maritime organizations and engage in both presentations and hands-on activities at workstations curated by participating companies.
“Our Maritime Interaction Day programs are designed to connect students directly with the people and opportunities shaping their region’s economy,” said Errin Howard, executive director of We Work the Waterways. “In Plaquemines Parish, where the Mississippi meets the Gulf, the maritime industry is not only vital to Louisiana but to the entire nation’s supply chain.”
October 1 marked the second annual Industry Interaction Day that WWW has held at Plaquemines Parish. While engagement was strong last year, Howard was excited to report that the second event surpassed last year in participation from both students and companies. More than 50 maritime industry representatives took part in the day. The event also boasted 19 interaction stations for students to rotate through, the highest number the organization has incorporated.
“It was incredible,” Howard said. “It felt like everyone was on Cloud Nine.”
WWW will be busy hosting Industry Interaction Days across the country now that the school year is in full swing. According to Howard, registration for several upcoming events is already at capacity.
“Industry professionals are starting to realize the importance of what we’re doing, and educators are realizing how important the maritime industry is and how many diverse careers we have to offer,” Howard said.
