C&C Marine Delivers Fourth Towboat To Canal Barge

C&C Marine and Repair has delivered the mv. Mimsy H. Lindner to Canal Barge Company, completing a four-vessel series of 2,600 hp. towboats for the New Orleans-based operator.

The Mimsy H. Lindner follows the mv. Al Sloss, mv. Deborah H. Valentine and mv. Cabby H. Boone, all delivered by C&C Marine’s Belle Chasse, La., shipyard since January.

C&C Marine is also building six towboats of the same design on speculation. One of those vessels is already under contract, while the remaining five are available. Deliveries are expected to begin in September and continue at approximately two-month intervals.

“Building a towboat on spec takes capital, manpower and production slots, and it takes real confidence in the boat you are putting on the water,” said Tony Cibilich, owner and president of C&C Marine and Repair. “We have that confidence, and it pays off on both ends. An operator who needs horsepower does not have to wait a full new-build cycle, and our shops stay on a steady, predictable schedule.”

Canal Barge worked with C&C Marine’s project management and engineering teams throughout construction of the four-vessel series. Adjustments were incorporated as the program progressed to better suit the company’s operations.

“Throughout the construction of all four boats, C&C Marine has not only met our expectations, but exceeded them,” said Mike Stone, project manager for Canal Barge Company. “The quality and performance of the vessels have been fantastic, and our captains particularly appreciate the additional horsepower these vessels provide.”

The mv. Mimsy H. Lindner is powered by two EPA Tier 4 Mitsubishi S12R main engines supplied by Laborde Products. The engines turn through Reintjes WAF 665 reduction gears supplied by Karl Senner LLC. Laborde Products also supplied the vessel’s generator sets.

“Over the past several years, we have seen a number of lower-horsepower towboats enter the market, but we continued to hear from operators — and particularly from captains — that they want additional horsepower,” said Matthew Dobson, head of engineering at C&C Marine and Repair. “The Mitsubishi S12R is a proven engine, and for this application we believe the 2,600-horsepower twin-screw arrangement provides an excellent combination of power, maneuverability, simplicity and maintainability.”

Compared with a 2,400 hp. triple-screw towboat, C&C Marine’s twin-screw configuration places approximately 1,300 hp. on each shaft rather than about 800 hp. per shaft. The two-engine arrangement also reduces the number of engines, gears, shafts and propellers requiring maintenance while providing additional working space in the engine room.

The vessel has accommodations for eight crewmembers. Kern Martin supplied the joiner system, which was selected to improve crew comfort and fire protection.

GMENI Marine Electronics and Supply furnished the navigation and communications package. Equipment includes Furuno radars, a transducer, satellite compass, automatic identification system, bridge alarm system and loudhailer. The pilothouse also has a Standard Horizon VHF radio, Radio Zeeland swingmeter, Ritchie magnetic compass and Young weather sensor.

Deck equipment includes two Carlisle & Finch 1,000-watt searchlights and two Wintech 40-ton winches.

The mv. Mimsy H. Lindner measures 87 feet by 33 feet, 8 inches, with a depth of 11 feet, 3 inches. It is outfitted for Subchapter M service on inland rivers, canals and intracoastal waterways.
