Mobile Engineer District Celebrates New Headquarters

On June 30, the Mobile Engineer District opened the doors to its new district headquarters building in downtown Mobile, Ala. The Mobile District held a ribbon cutting ceremony along with the city of Mobile and the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.

Construction of the $92 million building started in 2022 after over a decade of planning between the city of Mobile and the Corps. Over 800 employees will work inside the new 6-story, 190,000 square-foot facility. It’ll be the first time in decades that the Mobile District’s operations will be housed in one building.

“This new headquarters is more than a building,” said Col. Jeremy Chapman, commander of the Mobile District. “It’s a symbol of the continued commitment USACE has made to this region and the communities we serve. Bringing our teams together in a state-of-the-art facility will help us work smarter, respond faster and deliver stronger results across our area of responsibility.”

The new building boasts modern infrastructure and secure workspaces. Located downtown near the I-10, the site offers Corps personnel convenient access to military construction projects and emergency operations.

A new multi-level parking structure is also in the final development stages, built atop an old ground-level parking lot.

The new headquarters is the first completed out of multiple Mobile renovation projects made possible under a contract signed in 2023. The new Mobile Arena, which will accommodate over 10,000 people, is currently under construction down the street from the new Mobile Engineer District headquarters, on the other side of the nearly complete parking structure. The previous Mobile Civic Center was demolished last fall, and the new arena is slated to be completed in 2027.

“The City of Mobile has a long history with USACE, and we were thrilled to be a partner in their effort to build this incredible new facility,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “I know that the city’s new parking deck will serve USACE employees’ needs while also providing the capacity needed for the incredible events coming to our city because of Mobile Arena. The future of downtown Mobile is bright because of the significant investments happening on this property, and the best is yet to come.”
