Obituary: Capt. Warren Nevels Jr.

Capt. Warren Nevels Jr., a native of Vicksburg, Miss., who was a boat captain for Ergon Marine for more than 27 years, died July 29 at the age of 67.

Nevels was preceded in death by his mother and father, Shirley Sherrard Nevels Estraca and Warren Nevels Sr., his sister, Lisa Nevels, and his son, Jason Nevels. He is survived by his wife, Denise; children, Scott Nevels and Keeley Haigh; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four siblings; and extended family.

Nevels’ family described him as “the true definition of a hard-working man,” who provided for and led his family “with grace and honor.” During his time at Ergon, Nevels was known for his dedication to training up the mariners around him.

“Warren considered the employees of Ergon as family members,” Nevels’ obituary stated.

Warren and Denise Nevels were married for 50 years. According to his obituary, Nevels enjoyed “taking his grandchildren to play outside to catch bugs to scare Denise.” He also enjoyed making beignets and sharing other treats, like “crackers and cheese.”

“Though he will be missed deeply, we are at peace knowing he is not suffering and was welcomed with open arms by family members in heaven,” his obituary stated.

A funeral service was held August 2 in Vicksburg. Among the honorary pallbearers at the funeral were “all employees of Ergon Marine.”
