Ameritank Planning 66-Barge Fleet In Houston

Ameritank LLC is developing a 147-acre liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage terminal and industrial complex on the Houston Ship Channel in La Porte, Texas. Designed to be a “strategic, multi-modal terminal,” it is positioned at Mile 308 with direct deepwater access, Union Pacific rail and proximity to 60 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

The facility features Foreign Trade Zone 84 designation, 840 megawatts of power capacity and 4 billion gallons of annual water access.

As part of the project, the company says its barge fleeting area will accommodate up to 66 barges via a 150-foot-wide fleeting channel, supported by 16 mooring dolphins and optimized water depths for both river barges and chemical barges. It is located at the former Bertrand Power Plant site, surrounded by ExxonMobil, Kinder Morgan, Enterprise Products and Chevron Phillips.

According to Ameritank’s website, the facility will support both 300-foot by 54-foot river barges and 185-foot by 35-foot chemical barges with draft requirements of 2.5 to 3.5 feet — optimized for light-loaded and empty barge storage without operational constraints.

Ameritank LLC (not to be confused with Ameritanks, a Cincinnati, Ohio, company providing tank cleaning and fuel polishing services), was founded in 2022. It will offer commodity blending and wastewater treatment along with barge fleeting services.

It is also developing a 42-acre industrial outside storage yard at the La Porte site for heavy-haul truck parking, equipment staging and container storage, located 2.4 miles from Highway 225 and Beltway 8.
