Mv. Edwin Rider Completed For Vulcan Materials
Diversified Marine has completed construction of the mv. Edwin Rider, a new inland towboat built for Vulcan Materials. Constructed at the company’s shipyard in Bourg, La., the vessel is designed to support daily operations on the inland waterways with a dependable propulsion package built for long-term service. Vulcan Materials is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates, operating in 23 U.S. states as well as Mexico and the Bahamas.
The Edwin Rider is the second towboat Diversified Marine has built for Vulcan Materials, following the delivery of the mv. Larry Gravely. The project reflects the shipyard’s continued focus on building dependable workboats designed for the demands of commercial marine service.
The mv. Edwin Rider measures 72 feet by 30 feet, with a hull depth of 10 feet and a draft of 8 feet, 6 inches. Eye level from the pilothouse is approximately 31 feet, 10 inches. The vessel has five staterooms and three bathrooms.
Rhodes Electronics supplied the Furuno navigation and communications equipment. Juneau Marine furnished the heating and air-conditioning systems, including a 4-ton unit for the main deck and 3-ton units for the 01 deck/mechanical room and pilothouse.
The twin-screw propulsion system consists of two Mitsubishi S6R2-Y3 Tier 3 main engines supplied by Laborde Products. Each engine is rated at 803 hp. at 1,400 rpm., providing a total of 1,606 hp. The engines turn 76- by 66-inch propellers supplied by Sound Propeller Services through Twin Disc MGX-5321 reduction gears with a ratio of 5.96:1. Sewart Supply furnished the reduction gears.
The vessel’s 7-inch cold-rolled steel shafts have stainless steel journals. Wärtsilä supplied the shaft seals, and Cutlass supplied the bearings. East Park Radiator furnished the grid-cooling system.
Ship’s service power is provided by John Deere PE4045TFM85 auxiliary engines driving 99 kw. generators producing 120/208-volt, three-phase power. Unlimited Controls supplied the engine alarms and switchgear.
NABRICO supplied two 40-ton electric deck winches. The vessel is fitted with 10- by 12-inch rubber fenders furnished by Schuyler Maritime. Sherwin-Williams supplied the coatings.
Tank capacities include 20,750 gallons of fuel, 6,560 gallons of potable water, 10,780 gallons of trim water, 400 gallons of lubricating oil, 835 gallons of waste oil, 835 gallons of oily bilge and 200 gallons of gear oil.
Diversified Marine is a Louisiana-based shipyard building and repairing tugboats and other work vessels for inland and coastal service. Founded in 2007, the company operates a full-service facility in south Louisiana supporting new construction, maintenance and repair work.
