Carver Companies Links Port, Marine And Material Operations
Carver Companies has developed a network of material production, port, marine transportation, cargo-handling and storage operations extending from Atlantic Canada to the U.S. East and Gulf coasts.
Major infrastructure projects and commodity movements often require material production, loading equipment, marine transportation, storage, transloading and final delivery, all coordinated around vessel schedules and project deadlines.
Carver’s network connects operations in New Brunswick, New York and South Carolina with markets and project sites throughout the Northeast, along the East and Gulf coasts, across inland waterways and on international coastal routes. The company uses tugboats, barges, stevedoring crews, E-Cranes and conveyor systems to move cargo among those locations.
“We did not build this network all at once,” said Stephen Kelly, president of sales and business development. “Carver began as a construction company, and over time we invested in ports, vessels, equipment and additional material sources as our customers’ needs and the scale of the projects we supported continued to grow. Each step expanded what we could take on and gave us greater flexibility to serve customers across different regions, cargo types and project requirements.”
Aggregate Supply Begins In Atlantic Canada
Carver’s Canadian aggregate operations are anchored by Bayside Quarry in New Brunswick, which has an annual production capacity of approximately 2.5 million tons. Its location adjacent to the Port of Bayside allows stone to move directly from production to ocean transportation for projects and terminals along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts.
A new ship-loading conveyor has expanded the size and volume of material the port can handle. The conveyor can load smaller aggregate at rates of up to 3,000 tons per hour and riprap at up to 1,500 tons per hour. The system can accommodate stone measuring up to 15 inches.
The conveyor supports larger shipments, shorter vessel turnaround times and a steadier supply of aggregate to U.S. markets.
Charleston Serves Southeast Market
Carver Maritime Charleston serves as a receiving, storage and distribution hub for the Southeast. The facility has deepwater and rail access, more than 40 acres of outdoor laydown space and more than 300,000 square feet of indoor storage. The nearby Leatherman Material Yard can store approximately 300,000 short tons.
Aggregate from Bayside provides one example of how the locations operate together. Material can be produced in New Brunswick, transported by ship to Charleston, unloaded at Pier J and staged for delivery.
Carver delivered more than 4.1 million tons of material for construction of the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal and approximately 425,000 short tons for the South Carolina Ports Authority’s Navy Base Intermodal Facility.
The cargo mix handled through Charleston has expanded to include salt, bagged cement, gypsum and wire rod coils. Carver also conducts midstream operations in the Cooper River, handling raw steelmaking materials for Nucor.
An ABS-classed 3,000 Series E-Crane mounted on a barge allows cargo to be unloaded from ships away from a fixed berth. The crane can be repositioned as operating needs change. Cargo can then move through Pier J or into storage at Leatherman Yard until the customer is ready to receive it.
New York Ports Function As Project Platforms
The 125-acre Port of Coeymans has approximately 3,500 linear feet of deepwater frontage, along with heavy-lift staging, warehousing and manufacturing capabilities. Carver Marine Steel Works provides fabrication and vessel repair services, while the adjacent Coeymans Industrial Park offers industrial and warehouse space. North Shore Terminal supports New York Harbor and other downstate projects.
A 2026 economic impact study found that approximately 2.5 million tons of cargo move through the port annually. Together, the Port of Coeymans and Coeymans Industrial Park form a 425-acre campus that has received approximately $250 million in private investment during the past two decades.
The 22 businesses and organizations operating within or connected to the campus directly employ 793 people and support 1,192 jobs across Albany County, according to the study.
Several of Carver’s capabilities came together in July 2026 for the first loading of the subsea rock installation vessel mv. Acadia. The vessel, described as the first U.S.-flagged, Jones Act-compliant vessel of its kind, received an initial load of 20,000 metric tons of New York-sourced rock for the Empire Wind 1 project.
Approximately 175,000 tons are scheduled to move through the port during 10 vessel calls. Carver’s land-crawling 3,000 Series E-Crane, described as the world’s largest bulk material-handling crane, used a skip-pan attachment designed for the vessel’s holds. The initial loading was completed in two days.
The same crane is moving material for New York City’s East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. A barge-mounted E-Crane also placed more than 57,000 tons of aggregate at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
The projects demonstrate how Carver can position material-handling equipment at a port, alongside a vessel, aboard a barge or directly at a project site.
Marine Access Supports Rail And Bridge Construction
Carver’s New York operations are supporting the federally funded replacement of the Livingston Avenue Rail Bridge in Albany, N.Y., and the Raritan River Bridge in New Jersey. Both projects use waterfront staging and marine transportation to move components that would be difficult to deliver by road.
The Portal North Bridge project provides a completed example. Three steel arches were prefabricated at the Port of Coeymans. Each arch measured approximately 400 feet long and 50 feet wide and weighed about 5 million pounds.
Self-propelled modular transporters moved each structure across the dock and onto a barge. Carver Marine Towing tugboats then helped transport the arches on trips of approximately 30 hours down the Hudson and Hackensack rivers to New Jersey.
“Waterfront access alone is not enough for projects of this scale,” Kelly said. “Not every waterfront site has the dock strength, heavy-lift capacity and supporting infrastructure needed to move structures weighing thousands of tons across the dock.
“The Port of Coeymans provides that combination of assembly and staging space, heavy-lift capabilities and direct marine access. As investment in rail and bridge infrastructure continues, these projects create demand not only for specialized port facilities, but also for the tugboats, barges, equipment and crews needed to deliver major components to the project site.”
Across Carver’s network, facilities and equipment can be configured for individual cargoes and project requirements. Depending on the operation, customers may require additional storage, an alternate receiving port, a midstream cargo transfer or equipment capable of working away from a fixed dock.
Connecting those capabilities allows Carver to adjust operating plans as schedules, cargo volumes and site conditions change.
