Tanks Bound For Ohio Unloaded At Starvaggi Dock

Three large natural gas surge tanks were recently unloaded at Starvaggi Dock on Mile 66 of the Ohio River at Weirton, W.Va., using four Maxim Crane Works LP riggers, a 1,500-ton Liebherr LTM1400-7.1 crane, and a 450-ton Grove GMK6400 crane. The tanks arrived from Tulsa, Okla., for transport to the Mark West Energy Plant in Hopedale, Ohio.

The three tanks ranged in weight from 271,000 pounds to 322,000 pounds, according to Luke Myers, treasurer of Starvaggi Industries Inc. and Weirton Ice & Coal Supply Company.

The Liebherr crane was used to take the roofing off the barge. The crane, with help from the Grove crane, then lifted each surge tank from the barge to a waiting heavy-haul trailer. “It was an impressive thing to see,” said Myers, who added that the company has stayed busy loading and unloading its usual cargoes of coil, aggregates, coal and lime.
