H & L Removing Shoaling from Two New York Harbors

H & L Contracting was awarded two contracts by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District to dredge Three Mile Harbor and Montauk Harbor in New York. Dredging of Montauk Harbor began in early October and was expected to take about two weeks with work on Three Mile Harbor set to being immediately after.

Both projects were designed to remove chronic shoaling in the inlet between jetties that lead to the two harbors. More than 45,000 cubic yards of sand are expected to be cleared via pipeline dredge and pumped through pipes, across the jetties and onto adjacent beaches. Sand removed from Montauk Harbor will be deposited on the beach immediately west of the inlet, an area where contractors buried 1,000 tons of boulders in June to stabilize a parking lot damaged during Superstorm Sandy. The sand removed from Three Mile Harbor will be placed along Sammy’s Beach.

Under the $776,553 contract, H & L will dredge the areas to a depth of -14 mean lower low water plus two feet of allowable overdepth. Dredging will not encompass the entire channel but will only be conducted in areas of shoaling
