Corps To Host Dredging Meeting In Winona

The St. Paul Engineer District will host a public meeting January 31 in Winona, Minn., to gather public input into its planning efforts to manage Mississippi River dredged material.

The meeting is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at the Winona County History Center, 160 Johnson St.

The meeting will focus on commercial and recreational navigation trends, channel maintenance and dredged material management planning, and will include a brief discussion regarding the land acquisition process.

The Corps is currently revising its dredged material management plan for Mississippi River Pool 6, which encompasses Winona. The final plan will identify temporary and permanent placement locations for dredged material. Similar plans are being prepared in Pools 4 and 5. The plans, once complete, provide the path forward to continue maintaining the 9-foot navigation channel for the next 20 years, and possibly longer, the Corps said. An environmental assessment will be prepared as a part of each plan.
