Martin Marietta Plans Barge Facility

Martin Marietta Materials Inc. plans to construct a barge loading/unloading area at its existing facility along the Ohio River near Petersburg, Ky.

The proposed project would be located along the left bank of the Ohio at river Mile 496 in Boone County, Ky.

The proposal is included in an application for a Corps permit and was posted as a public notice on the Louisville Engineer District website March 17.

The application calls for a barge loading/unloading facility requiring the installation of three barge ties, two deadmen, a permanent work barge with two, 24-inch-diameter spud piles and an aerial conveyor system with four, 20-inch-diameter bracing piles. The fleeting area would extend to a maximum of 200 feet riverward for 780 feet along the left (Kentucky) bank of the Ohio River so as to accommodate eight barges in a two-barge-wide by four-barge-long configuration.

Barges would be moored at the location daily, and operations would be conducted Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the application. The proposed conveyor would transport sand, gravel and other similar construction aggregates to and from the barges at the existing Martin Marietta Materials operation.
