SCI Hosts Suicide Prevention Training
Seamen’s Church Institute will host SafeTALK suicide prevention training October 26 at its Center for Maritime Education in Paducah, Ky.
Training will take place from 8 a.m. to noon, with coffee and pastries provided beginning at 7:40 a.m. The center is located at 129 S. Water St.
SafeTALK is a half-day program designed to raise awareness and equip participants with the necessary skills to identify and help people who may be having suicidal thoughts.
“For some, a loved one lost to suicide can come out of nowhere,” SCI Chaplain David Shirk said. “They didn’t see or dismissed the signs.” SafeTALK provides the confidence to confront it, to ask the difficult questions and gain essential knowledge and tools that can make a difference in helping those who may be suffering.”
Chaplain Shirk went on to note that, “Depression is a concerning issue among mariners, so SafeTALK is a relevant, necessary course for those who work in our industry.”
Space is limited. To secure a spot in the SafeTALK training, contact SCI at 270-575-1005 or Chaplain David Shirk at email@example.com or call 270-210-5626.
The cost of the training is $45 per person, payable via checks made out to The Seamen’s Church Institute. Participants are requested to include “SafeTALK Paducah” in the memo line of their checks.
