Towboat Crews Pull Pinned Barge Away From Markland Dam

Two barges broke away from a tow about 7:50 a.m. January 29, with one becoming pinned against the upper gates at Markland Locks and Dam, Ohio River Mile 531.5.

No damage to the dam was reported.

One stray barge was immediately corralled in the lock. The other, which was loaded with scrap, was pulled over to the dam and became pinned on the piers, said Abby Khorfage, a public affairs specialist with the Louisville Engineer District.

The barge was recovered by 1:40 p.m. January 30. Photos posted to social media showed the barge, AEP 772, was pulled away from the dam by Campbell Transportation Company’s mv. Andrea S and mv. Marci Gale after crews threw a line over a bitt and carefully maneuvered it free.
