Serodino Inc., a shipbuilder based in Chattanooga, Tenn., has built a Super Tiger inland towboat for Jack Tanner Towing Company, an Illinois River-based towing and fleeting service in Havana, Ill.
The mv. Miss Hazel, which measures 60 feet by 24 feet with an 8-foot depth and 6-foot draft, is constructed of 1/2-inch plate throughout. Transverse framing is 5-inch by 3-inch by 3/8-inch on 24-inch centers. The inside motor mounts are continued fore and aft as a solid bulkhead to divide the hull into three collision compartments, three fuel tanks, the engineroom, three water tanks and three stern compartments. The Miss Hazel has tankage for 9,850 gallons of fuel. Schuyler rubber tow knees and 8-inch by 10-inch perimeter fenders protect the hull.
Power consists of two S6R Mitsubishi engines from Covington, La.-based Laborde Products which produce a total of 1,368 hp. at 1,800 rpm. The main engines, mated to Twin Disc MG-5222 reverse and reduction gears (4.03:1 ratio), turn 5-inch sleeved shafts and 52- by 40.5-inch by 1.2 DAR four-blade Rice Propulsion propellers, which together provide shoving and backing power while virtually eliminating vibrations.
Two 40 kw. John Deere MDDCA light plants supply auxiliary electric power with a redundant battery bank for back-up emergency power. Fernstrum zero knot coolers are built into the hull.
The superstructure is constructed of 3/16-inch plate with 2 1/2- by 2-inch angle framing. Watertight doors on the main deck are furnished by Dale’s Welding, with upper deck aluminum doors by Omega Products. All quarters are insulated and paneled, with poured epoxy floors. The Miss Hazel also features a 5-ton HVAC system. The rigging deck, which extends the second deck to envelop the towknees, is installed with 8-inch by 6-inch and 10-inch by 10-inch tubing and features port and starboard step-offs.
The first deck contains a modest head with a shower and a U.S. Coast Guard-approved type II marine sanitation device. While the Super Tiger design typically includes a galley on the first deck, the Miss Hazel’s first deck will be used as a work lock, per the request of Jack Tanner Towing. The second deck features a modest galley and break room. The pilothouse, with a 28-foot eye level, will control all aspects of vessel operations with full follow-up Kobelt levers and non-follow-up job controls. For tank barge readiness, the vessel is outfitted with a redundant operating station, located in the engineroom, and an automatic switchgear, all provided by Monitoring and Control Solutions. The Twin Disc throttle controls, three radios, loud hailer, Furuno radar, AIS, swing meter and multiple alarm systems complete the control and information center.
Delivery of the vessel is expected sometime this month.
