Conrad’s Amelia Shipyard Achieves Safety Milestone

Conrad Shipyard announced last month that its facility in Amelia, La., has gone two years without a recordable incident.

“This accomplishment reflects the dedication and commitment of Conrad’s employees to maintaining the highest standards of workplace safety,” the shipyard said in its announcement. “Achieving zero recordable incidents over a two-year period in a shipyard environment is no small feat, and it demonstrates the strong safety culture that exists across the organization.”

In July, the Morgan City, La.-based company was awarded the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) Safety Excellence Award in the Dredging Trade Partner category during the WEDA Annual Dredging Summit & Expo. Conrad also received the Shipbuilder’s Council of America (SCA) 2023 Excellence in Safety and Improvement in Safety awards, as well as the 2021 American Equity Underwriters Inc. (AEU) Safety Award.

“Safety is the foundation of everything we do at Conrad Shipyard,” said Johnny Conrad, executive chairman of Conrad Shipyard. “This milestone is a direct reflection of our employees’ commitment to our safety culture which includes taking personal responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of one another. We are proud of the Amelia team for setting the standard.”

Established in 1948, Conrad Industries designs, builds and overhauls barges, dredges and dredge support equipment, tugboats, ferries, drydocks, lift boats, offshore supply vessels and other steel products for both the commercial and government markets. The company provides both repair and new construction services at its five shipyards, which are located in southern Louisiana and Texas. The Amelia facility is currently working with the U.S. Navy to construct Yard, Repair, Berthing, Messing (YRBM) vessels, the first of which was delivered about a year ago. Conrad is contracted to complete seven more.
