Beach Renourishment

Great Lakes To Begin Grand Strand Renourishment

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) has begun mobilizing for its renourishment project at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Work will officially begin in December.

The $72 million contract for the renourishment was awarded in December 2024 by the Charleston Engineer District in response to severe erosion caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Debby in 2024. According to the Corps, GLDD will supplement 26 miles of shoreline with 2 million cubic yards of material, the equivalent of 200,000 dump trucks, and will reduce the risk to life and infrastructure behind the dunes along the Grand Strand.

While the city conducts regular maintenance every 10 years, the upcoming work is considered emergency renourishment. Crews will be working days and nights until work is finished, including on holidays. Work will be completed every 1,000 feet and last no more than a week per area, so the beach will still be open to visitors, excluding in marked work zones.

A tracker has been included on the Charleston Engineer District website so visitors can monitor progress and be aware of closed portions of the beach.
