Obituary: Michael Gene “Mike” Herschler

Michael Gene “Mike” Herschler of Quincy, Ill., died December 23 at Blessing Hospital. He was 81.
Herschler was a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River system for almost 60 years, and he worked with Canton Marine Towing for the same amount of time.
Outside of work, Herschler was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Quincy Boat Club, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the University of Illinois Alumni Association and Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, according to his obituary.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin L. and Wilma A. Zelle Herschler, and a son, Cory Gene Herschler. He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Casey (Leah) Herschler of O’Fallon, Mo.; a sister, Cynthia Sue (Harold) Zarn of Richfield, Minn.; and two grandchildren, along with a nephew, niece, great nephew and two great nieces.
Visitation was set for January 2 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. A funeral was scheduled for 11 a.m. January 3 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial was to be at Quincy Memorial Park.
