Mobile District Announces Holt Lock Repair Schedule
Holt Lock (Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Mile 347) will have several upcoming closures to allow repairs to a lock monolith.
According to a Notice to Navigation Interests from the Mobile Engineer District, the lock will be closed to navigation from 6 a.m. Mondays through 6 a.m. Saturdays and open to navigation from 6 a.m. Saturdays through 6 a.m. Mondays.
The tentative remaining schedule for the repairs and major activities includes a 60-day closure July 13 to September 10; reopening September 11 through October 1; and closing again October 2 to October 26 for a 25-day closure.
From October 27 to November 6, the lock will operate on a five-day closed, two-day open schedule.
Due to the nature of construction, the dates are subject to change, according to the Corps.
An emergency closure of the lock lasted 102 days in 2024. It reopened after a temporary repair to cracks in a monolith, which involved installing a bulkhead in front of a problematic fill culvert that runs through the base of a cracked monolith, essentially sealing it off from the upstream pressure of the water. The upcoming closures will allow for a permanent solution. Holt Lock was built in 1966 and has exceeded its design life.
