The U.S.S. Kidd Veterans Museum announced May 13 that the “Welcome Home” celebration planned for the return of the U.S.S. Kidd has been postponed. Dangerously low river levels on the Mississippi River have made it unsafe for the vessel’s reinstallation in Baton Rouge, La., which was originally scheduled for May 23. A rescheduled date for the homecoming celebration has yet to be announced.
Originally launched in 1943, the historic World War II destroyer is one of only four remaining Fletcher-class destroyers of its kind out of an original total of 175.Beginning in 2024, the Kidd underwent a two-year, $15 million renovation to restore a hull that would have otherwise rapidly deteriorated. Private donors and the Louisiana state legislature provided the funds for the vessel’s restoration, and the ship was restored to its original World War II configuration with new paint, repaired decks and a sturdy hull, among other fixes.
“Our team is actively exploring all available options and working diligently to bring the U.S.S. Kidd back as quickly and safely as possible,” said Les Nicholson, chairman of the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission. “While we’re disappointed by the delay, we are incredibly excited about her return and the role she will continue to play as a centerpiece of Baton Rouge’s riverfront.”
Although the vessel’s homecoming has been delayed, educational activities and tours continue so that visitors can learn and appreciate the ship’s history despite its absence.
The museum is also in the process of developing future programming, including a “Pirates Ball” in honor of the vessel’s moniker as the “Pirate of the Pacific” and its permission as the only vessel in the U.S. fleet authorized to fly the skull and crossbones “Jolly Roger” flag associated with piracy. Fundraising efforts for the Kidd’s preservation will also begin in the next few months.
Those who would like to participate in the return of the U.S.S Kidd and its ongoing preservation can make a tax-deductible donation at https://www.usskidd.com/product/donations.
