River Marine Service Proposes New Barge Terminal

River Marine Service Inc., based in Cumberland City, Tenn., is requesting permission from the Nashville Engineer District to build a new barge terminal and fleet on the Cumberland River.

The proposed project’s purpose is to provide offloading facilities for synthetic gypsum for industries in the Cumberland City area. It would be located at Cumberland River Mile 104.5 on the left bank, on about 1,000 feet of river frontage. The terminal would consist of a conveyor position on a spud barge measuring 40 feet wide by 200 feet long. It would accommodate one standard barge during offloading operations.

The fleeting area would be configured two barges wide by four barges long and would extend a maximum of 100 linear feet at normal winter pool. The fleeted barges would be moored by the installation of five deadmen anchors, spaced at 200-foot intervals along the riverbank. About 200 linear feet of riverbank at the proposed terminal would be stabilized by riprap from a top elevation of 361.0 to a bottom elevation of 354.0.

The location has sufficient depth for the project and new dredging would not be required, the company said in its proposal.
