Revolutionary War-Era Cannons Unveiled In Savannah Museum
Seventeen Revolutionary War-era cannons and other artifacts recovered during dredging for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project were officially unveiled July 2 at the Savannah History Museum in Savannah, Ga.
The artifacts, now on display to the public at the museum, were discovered in 2021 during dredging operations connected to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah Harbor Expansion Project. In total, 19 cannons, cannon fragments and other historical artifacts were recovered from the Savannah River.
Following the discovery, the Corps’ Savannah Engineer District partnered with the Coastal Heritage Society, Commonwealth Heritage Group and Texas A&M University to preserve and restore the artifacts for long-term curation and public display.
The restoration work took place over three years at the Texas A&M Conservation Research Laboratory, where specialists cleaned, stabilized and conserved the recovered items. Seventeen of the cannons and several additional artifacts returned to Savannah on June 3 after completion of the restoration process.
