IMX Birthday Bash: Back Home For WJ

Schoellhorn-Albrecht and The Waterways Journal, owner of the Inland Marine Expo (IMX), will once again reunite under the same roof after having spent decades in different St. Louis, Mo., offices.

In the 1890s, the WJ offices were established on the second floor of the machine company’s building, which is now the site of Morgan Street Brewery, where IMX will host its 5th anniversary birthday bash event from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 23.

Legend has it that the WJ would publish ads for Schoellhorn-Allbrecht in exchange for rent, which is why the earlier editions of the WJ contained so many full-page ads for the company, the WJ’s oldest advertiser.

Both companies have since moved out of the building, allowing other ventures to utilize the historic space. In May 1995, the owners of Morgan Street Brewery acquired the building, which had been last occupied in mid-1980s by the Second Street Diner. The restaurant and brewery opened in September 1995, and it was brewing its first beer by November of that year.

The building is one of the oldest on Laclede’s Landing, a historic section of the city with bars, restaurants and other businesses, near the Mississippi riverfront.

Today, Schoellhorn-Albrecht designs and manufactures capstans, anchor windlasses, winches, deck fittings, aluminum gangways and barge access systems, among other things. The 131-year-old company also maintains an inventory of fully-warranted remanufactured capstans and can ship an exchange capstan to vessels without delay when it is critically needed.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our history with one of our oldest advertisers and former landlord at this can’t-miss event,” said Nelson Spencer Jr., publisher of the WJ and tradeshow director for IMX.
