Scalise is a member of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, one of three standing committees in the House. He is also on the Energy Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.

Scalise was shot and critically wounded June 14, 2017, in Alexandria, Va., while participating in a practice for the Republican congressional baseball team in advance of the annual congressional baseball game. The shooter, James Hodgkinson, was shot and later died of wounds suffered in a shootout near the baseball field. In the year since the shooting, Scalise has undergone numerous surgeries.

He returned to the House September 28, 2017, less than four months after the shooting. He was greeted with cheers and an extended standing ovation.
