Photo Feature: The Mv. Mark Glaab Near Calcasieu Lock
The mv. Mark Glaab approaches the Calcasieu Lock near Lake Charles, La., as a rainbow appears on the horizon after a summer rainstorm. Located in Cameron Parish approximately 10 miles south of Lake Charles, La., the Calcasieu Lock is a feature of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) that facilitates navigation and helps reduce the risk of saltwater intrusion from the Calcasieu River into the Mermentau River Basin, a major agricultural area. Operated by personnel from the New Orleans Engineer District, the Calcasieu Lock is the 10th busiest lock in the nation and serves as a vital navigation component along the GIWW. The mv. Mark Glaab is a 2,000 hp., twin-screw towboat built in 2018 by Steiner Construction Company in Bayou La Batre, Ala. The z-drive towboat, which measures 70 by 30 feet and features Cat C32 main engines, was first owned by Hined Furlong Line before being sold in early 2021 to American Commercial Barge Line.
