Obituary: Mike Marko

Michael James Marko, founder of Mike’s Inc., passed away Tuesday, November 11, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was 85 years old.
Marko was born October 31, 1940, in Carlyle, Ill., to James and Bianca (Fornelli) Marko. Since he was a child, he loved to get his hands dirty. His father taught him mechanical work from a young age, putting him to work on towboats since he was 8 years old. His father taught him to weld, and the pair built a houseboat called The Kathy. He got his tankerman’s license at 15.
Marko founded Mike’s Inc. with his father in 1965 after working as a pipeline welder for Cherokee Pipeline. The business started as a welding, diesel engine repair and commercial marine repair business out of the family’s two-car garage. Marko was known for accepting any and all customers, no matter the job, and often went without sleep to complete his work. The father-son team soon earned a reputation for their dedication and work ethic, and the business grew to Roxana, Ill. Marko served as the working owner of Mike’s Inc., now with a shipyard in East Alton, Ill., and main facility in South Roxana, Ill., until his passing.

Known affectionately as “Sparky,” Marko was respected in the maritime industry for his perseverance, problem solving-skills, can-do attitude and strong work ethic. His tenacity and contributions to the maritime world led to him being awarded the Inland Marine Expo (IMX) Achievement Award in 2021, joining the names of other legends in the maritime industry.
Along with growing his business, Marko served as a cook in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Marko’s life revolved around the water both professionally and personally. He acquired both his scuba diving and aviation pilot’s licenses, was an avid reader and enjoyed pleasure boating of any kind. He was a member of multiple water ski clubs during his youth, even learning to jump and barefoot ski. Marko was also a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was actively involved with the maintenance and upkeep of the church and grounds.
Marko is survived by his wife, Pam, and his five children and their spouses, Sue Tucker (Arlie), Amy Jo Marko, Mike Marko Jr. (Amanada), Tiffany Yiatras (Harry) and Casey Marko, as well as six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rose.
A visitation was to be held Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. until a prayer service at 4 p.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with the Rev. Jeff Holtman, OSF, officiating. A private burial service will take place at Valhalla Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Living Lands & Waters (LL&W). Online condolences and a guestbook can be found at www.eliaskallalandshaff.com.
