Richard “Rich” Franklin McCarty

Richard “Rich” Franklin McCarty, age 57, died January 28 after a long battle with cancer. Born March 9, 1968, McCarty spent the last 40 years of his life with his high school sweetheart, Jill, whom he married in September 1993. A graduate of St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Ky., he earned a business degree from the University of Louisville and an MBA from Sullivan University.

McCarty held management roles at UPS Flight Group, Greater Louisville Inc. and the Kentucky Industrial Development Council before joining American Commercial Barge Line, where he served as senior director of marketing, grain and fertilizer. In 2023, ACBL named a boat after him, the mv. Richard McCarty.

In a message sent to customers and partners, ACBL leaders described McCarty, in part, as “not only a pillar of our organization but also a respected and loved figure across the barge transportation industry. His dedication to our customers, his deep industry expertise and his genuine passion for building lasting relationships helped shape who we are as a company.”

McCarty is survived by his wife, Jill Hamilton McCarty, and their two daughters. A funeral Mass was held February 4 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Louisville.
